Lighten Up! Add some humor to your workplace!

The economy got you down?  Is your workday less fulfilling that a year ago?

I want to throw out to cyber-land the possibility that adding humor and laughter to the workplace can greatly mitigate the bad news that is prevalent in the news media.

As it relates to my expertise, why not think of a creative award?  Although you are the one that knows what you can get away with in the workplace better than myself, now might be time to lighten the mood up a little.

Consider the following:

Poopy-pants (bad mood) Award
High-Strung Award
Worst Salesperson of the Day
Salesperson of the Day
Most Committed
Hardest Worker
Teamwork Award

While the first 3 above are not positive what-so-ever, consider the power in acknowledging if someone is in a bad mood, is too high-strung or didn’t have a good day in sales.  You don’t need to rub this in their face, but if done properly one might realize that they have been in a bad mood, high-strung or not been selling very well.  They might actually not want to have that label and do something to improve their attitude or sales performance.  If coupled with a creative, funny, or tacky award, the recipient should take it for what it is worth – a joke!  Don’t make this award be a one-off, permanent award – perpetualize it and pass it around!  Depending on your corporate culture, you might want to think this through all the way – this is just creative thought on my part.

The last 4 ideas are safer and can have a positive impact as well.  Acknowledging excellent performance on a daily, weekly or monthly time frame can boost performance as well.  All of my awards ideas (sales, commitment, hard work and teamwork) are excellent ways to add life to the workplace and improve morale.

Though times are tough, it doesn’t mean we have to stop having fun…
